Does American Express work in Ibiza?
Sometimes. Amex acceptance in Spain, and Ibiza specifically, is real but inconsistent, much lower than Visa or Mastercard acceptance. Plan around it rather than relying on it.
The honest picture
American Express charges merchants higher processing fees than Visa or Mastercard, so many independent businesses in Spain (including a lot of restaurants, bars, and smaller shops in Ibiza) simply don't take it. Larger hotels, higher-end venues, and businesses used to an international clientele are more likely to accept it, but there's no reliable rule you can apply from the outside. Online forums (Reddit's r/ibiza among them) are full of Americans asking this exact question, and the honest answer from people who've actually tried is "it depends, bring a backup."
Bottom line: Always carry a Visa or Mastercard as your primary or backup card. Don't plan a trip assuming Amex will be accepted everywhere, or even most places.
What tends to accept Amex
- Larger international hotel chains
- Higher-end restaurants and clubs that cater heavily to tourists
- Larger retail chains
What tends not to
- Independent restaurants, bars, and cafés, especially outside the main tourist zones
- Taxis
- Small shops, markets, and pharmacies
- Many mid-size venues, even ones otherwise well set up for international visitors
We're building a verified list
The gap we want to close: nobody has published an actual, checked list of which specific Ibiza hotels, restaurants, and clubs take Amex. Right now it's scattered forum anecdotes and individual venue FAQ pages. We're working on verifying acceptance directly with venues rather than guessing, and will publish a curated list here once it's real data rather than assumptions. If you've confirmed Amex acceptance (or rejection) somewhere recently, that kind of on-the-ground detail is exactly what will make this list useful. Check back as this page develops.
Practical workaround
Bring at least one Visa or Mastercard as your primary payment method, and treat Amex as a bonus if it happens to work: useful for points but not something to depend on. See our money, tipping & ATMs guide for broader card and cash strategy.
