Phone & eSIM for Ibiza
You have three real options for phone service in Ibiza: your US carrier's international roaming plan, a local/travel eSIM, or a physical local SIM. For most short trips, an eSIM is the simplest and cheapest option.
Option 1: eSIM (recommended for most trips)
If your phone supports eSIM (most iPhones and Android flagships from the last several years do), you can buy a European or Spain-specific data eSIM online before you fly and activate it on arrival, while keeping your US SIM active for calls and texts on your home number.
- Install it before you travel: most providers let you install ahead of time and activate only once you land, so you're not relying on Ibiza's airport wifi to set it up.
- Look for a Spain-specific or EU-wide data eSIM rather than a global one; regional plans are usually cheaper per GB.
- Keep your US SIM active (or in dual-SIM mode) if you want to keep receiving calls/texts on your normal number: the eSIM handles data, your US line handles everything else.
Option 2: Your US carrier's international plan
Simplest option, no setup required, but usually the most expensive per GB. Worth it if you're only in Ibiza briefly or don't want to touch your phone's settings. Check your specific carrier's international day-pass or roaming rates before you go: they vary widely.
Option 3: A physical local SIM
You can buy a Spanish prepaid SIM locally, but this means giving up your number for calls/texts during your trip (unless your phone supports dual SIM) and dealing with an unfamiliar carrier's sign-up process. Usually not worth the hassle for a short trip when an eSIM does the same job with none of the friction.
WhatsApp and iMessage still work fine
As long as you have data (via eSIM, roaming, or wifi), WhatsApp and iMessage work normally. WhatsApp in particular is the default way most people in Spain communicate, including many businesses and tour operators, so it's worth having set up before you arrive.
Emergency number: 112, not 911
In Spain, including Ibiza, the emergency number is 112: it connects to police, fire, and medical services, similar to 911 in the US. 911 will not work.
