Do Americans need a visa for Ibiza?
For short tourist trips, no. US citizens can visit Ibiza (and the rest of Spain's Schengen Area) without a visa, subject to the 90/180 day rule below. The two things that trip Americans up are confusing ESTA with a Schengen entry requirement, and getting anxious about ETIAS before it's even relevant to them.

The short version: Schengen's 90/180 rule
Spain is part of the Schengen Area. US passport holders can enter for tourism visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, across the entire Schengen Area combined, not 90 days per country. Make sure your passport meets the validity and issuance requirements Spain's government specifies (these are checked at the border, not enforced by airlines consistently, so don't assume boarding means you're compliant).
Do I need an ESTA for Spain? No
This is the single most common point of confusion for Americans researching this trip, and it's worth being direct about: ESTA is a US program, not an EU one. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is what foreign visitors use to enter the United States under the US Visa Waiver Program. It has nothing to do with entering Spain. If you're an American flying to Ibiza, you do not apply for an ESTA: that's not the system that applies to you.
What about ETIAS?
ETIAS is a genuinely EU-side system: a pre-travel authorization that will eventually be required for visa-exempt travelers (including Americans) entering the Schengen Area, similar in spirit to ESTA but run by the EU rather than the US. As of this page's last update, ETIAS is not yet a requirement for US travelers. Launch timing has slipped multiple times industry-wide, so rather than repeat a specific date that may already be wrong, check the official EU ETIAS site directly before you book if your trip is far enough out that this could become relevant.
